Recs & Misc.

Two of my favorite animated films are Pom Poko (left) and Paprika (right).

Paprika (2006) has it all! Thrill, spook, super trippy animation, and beautiful style ! I feel like the director, Satoshi Kon, took parts that worked best in his past works (like Perfect Blue (1997) and Paranoia Agent (2004)), and put it all into a vivid dream that is Paprika. If I ever need to think about the most wildly animated parade scene in a film, it would be from this!

Pom Poko (1994) is about raccoon dogs fighting to save their forest from rapid urbanization. It’s a sad film that shows displacement and forced assimilation (and even that cruel fate is only viable for some). The film also focuses on the raccoon dogs’ immense value in pleasure, play, and rest. They are extremely mischievous, sometimes violent, and quick to celebrate! Rewatching this last year made me think of this page in The Faggots & Their Friends Between Revolutions:

Like Paprika, Pom Poko also has a beautifully animated parade scene! The film frequently flips between 3 distinct ways of drawing the raccoon dogs depending on the situation, and it’s done so effectively ! It’s my favorite Studio Ghibli film for many reasons. And it’s interesting this film isn’t as known as all the other Studio Ghibli films—maybe because of the raccoon dog’s giant shape-shifting ballsacks? Or maybe D*sney didn’t like the negative portrayal of a big theme park? ¯_(ツ)_/¯I also want to share with you the incredible work at bbeautyssupply.com ! Owen makes the most beautiful jewelry with chain weaves and lucky knots *o* Please go take a look!
Finally, I want to share this sweet online food zine by Ag, which is full of recipes (-’: I have a tomato fried egg recipe in there too! Please check it out here <3

Thank you for reading! Feel free to email me with any questions/comments, and I hope you have a happy lunar new year! !

Recs & Misc.

First, I want to share these collectives/funds that are ongoing efforts. Please check them out and consider supporting if you are able to:

1. The Breakfast Collective BK
A Queer/Trans POC centered collective serving breakfast out of myrtle-bway every Monday @ 9am. Venmo: jan_elle

2. Help a Black Queer person pay their bills
A New York-based Black Queer person (who would like to remain anonymous) is in need of financial assistance. Venmo: @kiana-picklz, Cashapp: @$bitchmakena

3. Club A NYC
Anarchists Collective that provides food, groceries, PPE and hygiene supplies to the community out of the Bushwick City Farm in Brooklyn, NY every Wednesday and Saturday from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

4. Help NYC drivers launch a platform cooperative
A driver-owned rideshare platform to become an alternative to the big rideshare companies that run on the exploited labor of a 91%-immigrant workforce of 85,000 drivers.
Funding has ended for this, but they’re looking for volunteers to help make the app happen!

1. Krtek/Mole (first shown in 1956) is an animated series of cartoons created by Czech animator Zdeněk Miler. I watched these when I was really little and recently saw a bunch of the episodes are on utube! It’s even better than I remembered! A super sweet mole character and other animal friends overcome obstacles and adventures together in a beautifully drawn world. Also might be interesting to compare this very socialist kids’ show to American kids’ show classics (like maybe Tom and Jerry)? I’m not sure though I haven’t thought too deeply on this yet :P

2. 大鬧天宮/Uproar in Heaven (1964) is a Chinese animation about the beloved Monkey King (my idol lol). I haven’t seen this particular movie as a kid, but watching it recently, I loved the incredible style and colors. And it is a pretty good re-telling of the monkey king’s origin story if you‘re interested. [The full movie is also on utube]

3. Ruben Brandt, Collector (2018) is a Hungarian animated thriller film. Not too serious of a plot, but a fun watch with cool music and a really interesting use of 3D computer animation! The strange style grew on me, and I love a heist movie..

Last but not least, I want to share this beautiful album, by ambient-electronic composer Rachika Nayar, that is available for pre-order. This is my incredible friend’s debut album! I hope you will enjoy with me (-’:

And that’s all for letter 03. Thank you for reading and your continued support! Stay safe <3

Ask Me

For future newsletters, I’m hoping to have a section where I can answer questions— whether it’s advice on tattooing, about other art mediums, more movie/show/comic recommendations/reviews, or completely unrelated (maybe even difficult) questions. :o

Feel free to email me any questions you have, and I’ll try to answer them to the best of my abilities! If the question allows for it, I could maybe illustrate or animate a response too.

Someone asked me if God exists, Sept 2018

Recs & Misc.

1. The Animatrix (2003) is a collection of 9 animated short films. They give backstory to the Matrix universe, like the downfall of humanity, the creation of the Matrix, and individuals’ stories outside of the live-action trilogy. The thumbnail I chose is from the last short (directed by Peter Chung, who also created & directed Æon Flux !), one of my favorites from the collection.

2. A video game I recommend is INSIDE (first released in 2016), a thriller puzzle game set in a mysterious and dystopian world. The art and sound designs are incredible ! I was really lucky my friend showed this to me with no explanation of what to expect, and that definitely added to the experience :’O

3. Dorohedoro (completed in 2018), is a manga by super mysterious Q Hayashida (the only photo associated with her when you search this name is of a completely unrelated actor!) The story is set in a strange and violent post-apocalyptic world full of chaos, mystery, magic, and FRIENDSHIP!! Highly recommend for the friendship and sweet characters, if you don’t mind the gore. It has been made into a show too, but only a few episodes have been released.

I want to thank everyone that got a tattoo from the August fundraising flash designs. A total of $1780 was raised and split between the funds: Homeless Black Trans Women Fund, Disabled Black Sex Worker Fund, and TRANScending Barriers: Housing & Land for TGNC people in Georgia.

And here are some additional funds I want to share that go towards really important work:

- Support the Fight for Incarcerated People's Basic Human Rights

- Help Pay BIPOC SWs & Give Expanded Fund Support

- Fund Access to Resources for Incarcerated and Re-entering Folks

If you can, please continue to support/share these funds, as they are all still ongoing efforts!

And that’s all for letter 02. Sorry this one took so long to send out!! Feel free to email me with any inquiries, and thank you for reading and your continued support! :’-)

Recs & Misc.

I wanted to share these wonderful pages from The Faggots & Their Friends Between Revolutions (first published in 1977), by Larry Mitchell and illustrated by Ned Asta.

Kind of linking back to Mitchell's writing about his experience of queerness in the 1970s— the film (on the right) Torch Song Trilogy (1988) is about a drag queen in 1970s NYC, and his relationship with the three loves of his life. It’s one of my favorite films, and makes me cry everytime.

An animated film I recommend is Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (2000). The drawing and character designs are so beautiful and stylish ! Worth the watch for the art I think, if you don’t mind some gore and a surprising amount of focus on the romance lolol

And that’s all for my first newsletter. If you have a friend that might want one of these tattoos, feel free to forward them this website. Please email me with any inquiries, and thank you for reading! :’-)
